Customizing your website's main menu navigation

You can edit your website's main navigation or request our help.

There is a walkthrough video below or written instructions, if you prefer.

Having a simple, easy to use main menu navigation on your website can yield numerous benefits, including showing your clients what they want to see easily, laying out a proper map for search engines to index your site and reducing your bounce rate. With CountingWorks PRO 3.0 Portal, we provide our users with a good range of customization to their main menu navigation.

We have two options for the main navigation system: the Header Menu and the Footer Menu. The Header Menu will typically go on the header of your website, where you can include multiple drop-down menus and list every small page that you want to provide easy access to. On the other hand, we recommend keeping the Footer Menu simple with only the main pages and no drop-down option for a cleaner user interface. The Header Menu and Footer Menu are very similar in their functionality, but they are independent of each other and will serve different purposes based on your settings.

To customize your website's main navigation, simply navigate to the settings tab on your main dashboard. Expand the "Menus" section to find options for both the Header Menu and Footer Menu. From there, you can add, move, edit, and delete menu items to suit your needs.

In order to keep things simple, we refer to the main menu tabs as "menu items" and the pages within drop-down menus as "menu sub-items."

Adding a New Item:

To add a new menu item:

  1. Hover your cursor between the two menu items where you want the new item to be.
  2. Click on the orange plus sign and line that appear.
  3. A “New Item” window will appear. You can enter the name of the item and choose what the item will link to under Action Type.
    1. Link: you can enter a URL to any page inside or outside of your website.
    2. Page: you can choose to link to any page within your website. The link will automatically be updated even if you change the URL of your webpage later.
    3. Home Page: this item will link back to your home page.
    4. Dropdown: this item will become a dropdown menu where you can add more sub-items under it. The menu item itself won’t link to anything.
  4. You can choose whether you want the item’s link to be opened in a new tab by toggling the option at the bottom (this is not applicable for a dropdown menu).
  5. Click Save to confirm and create the new item.

To add a new sub-item:

  1. You can only add a new sub-item under a menu item that has the “Dropdown” Action Type. If you add a sub-item under a menu item with a link, the menu item will be turned into a “Dropdown” item.
  2. If the menu item already has sub-items, you can hover your cursor between the sub-items to create a new one. Alternatively, you can also click on the three-dot icon next to the menu item and choose “Add sub-item.”
  3. A “New sub-item” window will appear. Similar to adding a new menu item, you can enter the name of the sub-item and choose what the sub-item will link to under Action Type.
    1. Link: you can enter a URL to any page inside or outside of your website.
    2. Page: you can choose to link to any page within your website. The link will automatically be updated even if you change the URL of your webpage later.
    3. Home Page: this sub-item will link back to your home page.
    4. Note: you can’t create a dropdown sub-item.
  4. You can choose whether you want the sub-item’s link to be opened in a new tab by toggling the option at the bottom.
  5. Click Save to confirm and create the new sub-item.

Moving an Item:

To rearrange the order of a menu item or sub-item, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the menu settings in the main dashboard.
  2. Click and drag the item to your preferred position.
    - Alternatively, use the three-dot icon next to the item and select either "Move Up" or "Move Down" to adjust its position relative to neighboring items.

Please note that you cannot move a sub-item from one menu item to another. In such cases, you will need to recreate the sub-item under the desired menu item.

Editing an Item:

To edit any menu item or sub-item, click on the three-dot icon next to the item and choose “Edit.”

Deleting an Item:

To delete a menu item or sub-item, simply click on the three-dot icon and select "Remove." Keep in mind that by removing a menu item, all sub-items beneath it will also be deleted. However, the actual pages themselves will not be deleted. Only the links to them in the main navigation menu will be removed.
